Trading in onions commence after protest closure

Nashik, Oct 8 (UNI) Regular trading in onions commenced in this district today, including in Asia's biggest onion market at Lasalgaon and the second biggest at Pimpalgaon, after remaining closed since Friday in protest against the export ban.

Around 250 tractor-load of onions (approximately 6250 quintals) arrived in the Lasalgaon Agriculture Produce Market Committee till this afternoon and the rates were quoted between Rs 603 and Rs 1472.

The average rate quoted was at Rs 1,351.

At Pimpalgaon, around 80 tractors and 75 jeeps loaded with onions arrived and the minimum price quoted here was Rs 1125 and the maximum was Rs 1475. The average price was Rs 1341.

Meanwhile, following the government's decision to sell onions directly from the farmers to the consumers, 180 quintal of onions were sent to Mumbai yesterday in the presence of Pimpalgaon APMC chairman Dilip Bankar, who is also an MLA. Three truck-loads of onions were dispatched to Mumbai today.
