Nepal CEC for early constituent assembly polls

Kathmandu, Oct 8 (UNI) Nepal Chief Election Commissioner Bhoj Raj Pokharel has called for early elections for the constituent assembly.

''The political parties should decide about conducting constituent assembly election at the earliest so as not to let down the trust of the Nepali people and the international community,'' he was quoted as saying to Post, reported Kantipur.

He talked about the preparedness of the Nepal Election Commission for holding the polls by mid-December if the parties agreed.

''The leaders of concerned parties should admit their mistakes, justify their decisions and convince national and international community,'' added the CEC.

Earlier on October five, the Election Commission had suspended the November 22 Constituency Assembly polls in the country.

The decision was taken following a government request to suspend the polls.

The seven political parties decided to postpone the Constituent Assembly (CA) poll as they failed to reach consensus on proclaiming a republic and adopting a proportional electoral system - two of the 22 pre-conditions set by the Maoists.
