Centre annoyed with NE states for poor performance

Agartala, Oct 8 (UNI) Union Ministry of Commerce has expressed annoyance over poor performance of monitoring and implementing projects sanctioned for infrastructural development of the region.

Official sources here today said that the ministry has recently issued a letter to the North Eastern Council(NEC) referring to instances of NE states's continuous demand for infrastructure development and asked the NE states to be attentive on the issue.

It said that a large portion of the Central funds sanctioned over the years for the purpose had unfortunately been unutilised.

''On per capita basis, each Northeastern state gets more money than any other state in the country,'' the letter mentioned, while touching upon ''corruption and siphoning of funds,'' it said although these were nationwide phenomena, it was particularly endemic in the Northeastern states.

The letter suggested ensuring a better public administration to maximize the impact of public expenditure because the Centre had been supporting the region from institutional funding, foreign direct investment and investment from domestic sources to boost the economy of the Northeastern States.
