UN Security Council meets to hear Myanmar report
UNITED NATIONS, Oct 5 (Reuters) The UN Security Council met today to hear a briefing on Myanmar by special envoy Ibrahim Gambari, who has just returned from a four-day visit sparked by concern over suppression of pro-democracy protests.
The Security Council dispatched him to Myanmar in hopes of ending a crackdown involving soldiers shooting into crowds and mass arrests that have sparked international outrage.
China, which has a veto in the Security Council, has said the situation in Myanmar is an internal affair and it opposes action by the Security Council.
