New Delhi, Oct 5 (UNI) Exuding confidence Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit said today Delhi would soon witness a better road scenario with the State Government likely to introduce high capacity buses and air-conditioned buses in the city and deciding to beautify the area around flyovers.

Speaking at the inaugural session of second Regional Conference on "Road Safety-Design, Construction and Operations of Roads" here, the Chief Minister said road traffic in the city was increasing at a rapid pace and would continue to grow in future as people continue to purchase vehicles for their requirement.

However, the trend could be reversed with introduction of a reliable, pollution-free, modern public transport system. Keeping this in view, the Government had been expending routes of the Delhi Metro and high capacity buses were being introduced.

''The number of vehicles in Delhi are much more than the total number of vehicles taken together in all Metro cities. In order to give more thrust to road safety, the Government has commissioned number of Foot Over Bridges with escalators which are providing relief to the pedestrians including aged and handicapped persons.

The FOBs are being utilised by the common man,''she said adding that Delhi is one of those big cities where wider roads had been commissioned.

Ms Dikshit said the Public Works Department might opt for a new technology for construction of roads to make longer life of roads and minimise maintenance expenditure of new roads. This would also help in overcoming problem of potholes and bumpy roads. The bitumen and plastic would be used for construction of roads under the new technology. This might facilitate use of waste plastic which is being collected by the rag pickers.
