19 sentenced to life in rioting, murder case

Junagadh, Gujarat, Oct 5 (UNI) A fast track court here has sentenced 19 persons to suffer life imprisonment holding them guilty of indulging in mob violence in which two persons were killed on September 3 2003 back.

Fast track court judge (Ms) P D Gupta also imposed a total fine of Rs 3.16 lakh.

The incident had occurred during the gram panchayat elections in Aarena village of Mangrol tehsil of this district when ''Ahirs'' and ''Durbars'' clashed following the victory of the former's candidate in the elections.

Pathubha Govindji Rathod, a Durbar, had fired from his revolver while 20 of his relatives had attacked Natha Nagar Jotava, his younger brother Hamir, and five others with swords and lathis. Natha and Hamir were seriously injured and later died.

During the trial, one accused died. In all 60 witnesses and 200 evidences were examined.
