Srinagar, Oct 3 (UNI) In one of the fiercest encounter witnessed this year, two Army officers and nine militants, who reportedly infiltrated from Pakistan Occupied Kashmir (POK) recently, were killed in a night-long gun-battle in Baramulla district of north Kashmir.

Meanwhile, another militant was killed by security forces in south Kashmir district of Pulwama today.

The encounter ensued after militants, hiding in different houses, attacked a patrol of 34 Rashtriya Rifles (RR) at Tangmarg in Baramulla yesterday afternoon, a defence ministry spokesman today said.

Reinforcements were rushed to the area from nearby camps and the entire village was cordoned off, he said, adding militants were hiding in a number of houses. The civilians were taken to safer places before the final assault was launched against the militants.

In the clash, a Major of 34 RR K P Vinay and three Al-Badr militants were killed. One of the slain militant has been identified as divisional commander of the Al-Badr.

He said three soldiers, including Major D R Raman, a resident of Channai, were wounded in the battle. Major Raman later died in the base hospital here, he said.

A report from Baramulla said four soldiers and a civilian were injured and six houses were damaged in the encounter.

He said when a search party entered to clear the area, they were again fired upon by militants hiding in a house. They were hiding in several houses, he said, adding the exact number of slain militants would be known only after the operation was over.

All nine militants were killed this afternoon, the defence spokesman said. A large cache of arms and ammunition, including nine AK rifles were recovered from the slain militants who had reportedly sneaked into this side from PoK recently.

A police spokesman said an encounter took place between militants and security forces at litter Pulwama in south Kashmir early today.

In the encounter, an unidentified militant was killed and some arms and ammunition were recovered from the site, he said.
