Muscat celebrates Gandhi Jayanti
Dubai, Oct 2: Omani scholars today will speak on the life of Mahatma Gandhi to mark his Birthday, which is being observed as the International Day of Peace and Non-Violence all over the world.
''For the first time the UN has decided to commemorate October 2 as International Day of Peace and Non-violence,'' India's Ambassador to Oman Anil Wadhwa said in a media briefing.
He said the UN decision followed India introducing a resolution at the UN in this regard. The decision reflects the enormous resonance Mahatma's philosophy enjoys in today's world, he added.
Indian Social Club President Satish Nambiar announced that Vice-chancellor of Sohar University Abud Al Sanafi and the Director-General of Higher Education and Vice Chairman of the Oman Historical Society Salem Al Maskeri will talk on the subject of peace and non-violence at a function to be held at the Indian School, Muscat.
Students from schools across Dubai have been invited to participate. The highlight of the programme will be a public meeting wherein a distinguished panel of eminent Emiratis and select representatives of the international community will share their thoughts on the importance of non-violence and speak about the relevance of Gandhian philosophy in today"s world.
