Chandigarh, Oct 1 (UNI) Jagtar Singh Hawara and Balwant Singh, the two accused convicted and sentenced to death in Beant Singh assassination case, today filed a petition in the Punjab and Haryana High Court seeking directions to declare their solitary confinement as illegal and in violation of Supreme Court directions.

Citing the Supreme Court's directive in Sunil Batra versus Delhi Aadministration case 1978, the two convicts presently lodged in Burail Jail here, said they were being kept in separate cells and were taken out only for half an hour each in morning and evening daily.

Hawara has filed an appeal against death sentence in the High Court.

However, Balwant, who did not defend himself during the trials, has opted against making any appeal against his conviction and sentence in the assassination case of the then Punjab Chief Minister Beant Singh.
