DPA sans Cong observes fast over SSCP

Puducherry, Oct 1 (UNI) The DMK-led Democratic Progressive Alliance (DPA) barring the Congress today observed a fast to press for the speedy implementation of the Sethusamundram Shipping Canal Project (SSCP).

The non-participation of the Congress invited sharp criticism from the Left which described it as a ''cowardly'' act.

Desptie Supreme Court's judgement, a bandh-like situation prevailed in the union territory with all inter-state buses remaining off the road. Most of the shops and other business establishments were also closed.

Heavy police pickets were posted at all vulnerable areas of the town. However, no untoward incidents reported from any area.

DMK Karaikal District Convenor A M H Nazeem led the agitation in the region.

Meanwhile, the Opposition AIADMK demanded the dismissal of the Congress Government in the union territory for its failure to ensure normalcy. The BJP also criticised the government for the hardship caused to the public.
