Chennai, Oct 1 (UNI) Leaders of the Democratic Progressive Alliance (DPA) parties, participating in the daylong fast here on the Sethusamudram Shipping Canal Project (SSCP) issue, today had a dig at the judiciary, saying ''it should stay within its limits''.

Setting the tone for the ''judiciary bashing'' was Union Shipping and Road Transport Minister T R Baalu, who wondered whether the courts were giving the right decisions.

''Why would there be appeals or higher benches if every judge was right?,'' he asked.

''Even people in the judiciary are involved in scandals and there is an impeachment motion for judges in this regard,'' he said, insnuating at the controversy surrounding former Chief Justice Y K Sabharwal.

CPI National Secretary D Raja said courts should not interfere in issues relating to people's welfare as they should be decided only by Parliament.

''The Supreme Court has been giving some strange verdicts on issues like the SSCP, 27 per cent OBC quota and labour issues,'' he said, opining that ''courts should stay within their limits.'' Dravidar Kazhagam leader K Veeramani questioned the ''enthusiasm'' of the apex court hearing a case on Sunday at a time when there was a backlog of lakhs of cases in the country.
