YANGON, Sep 30 (Reuters) UN envoy Ibrahim Gambari arrived in Yangon today from the Myanmar junta's new capital and was expected to meet detained opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi, diplomatic sources said.

There was no word on who Gambari had met in Naypyidaw, 385 km to the north of Yangon, on his mission to bring the ruling generals and their many foes to the peace table and end a bloody crackdown on mass protests.

A Foreign Ministry official contacted from Yangon refused comment.

But the diplomatic sources said Gambari almost certainly met Senior General Than Shwe during his overnight stay in Naypyidaw, as the junta chief was the only one with the power to give the UN envoy permission to meet Suu Kyi.
