Hyderabad, Sep 29 (UNI) India needs to catch up with the rest of the world in hardware development in the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) sector, Atomic Energy Commission (AEC) Chairman Anil Kakodkar said today.

Inaugurating the Annual Technical Convention of the Institution of Electronics and Telecommunication Engineers (IETE), he said ''given a strong scientific base in the country, India can achieve hardware development in the field of micro electronics''.

A revolution was taking place in the ICT sector, which had provided the country new and powerful means to accelerate the progress in the areas of space, atomic energy, communication, mass media, civil aviation, meteorology, industry automation, medical sciences and entertainment, he observed.

''The onset of wireless telephone, advanced computers and internet has changed the way we live, learn and work and will continue to transform our lives in many ways,'' he pointed out.

These new technologies have the potential to open up new opportunities to the segment of population yet untouched by technological developments, he said.
