SC permits Musharraf to contest Presidential elections

Islamabad, Sept 28 (UNI) In a major relief to belaguered President Pervez Musharraf, the Supreme Court of Pakistan today permitted him to contest the coming presidential polls while being the Army Chief, dismissing all petitions challenging his holding dual posts.

A nine-member constitutional bench, headed by Justice Rana Bhagwandas, dismissed by a majority verdict of 6-3, identical petitions filed by the Jamaat-e-Islami, the Imran Khan led-Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf (PTI) and JI Amir and six-party Majlis Muttahida Amal (MMA) chief Qazi Hussain Ahmed as ''non-maintainable.'' The other judges on the bench were Justice Javed Iqbal, Justice Abdul Hameed Dogar, Justice Sardar Muhammad Raza Khan, Justice Muhammad Nawaz Abbasi, Justice Faqir Muhammad Khokar, Justice Falak Sher, Justice Mian Shakirullah Jan and Justice M Javed Buttar.
