43 file nomination for Pakistan presidential polls

Islamabad, Sep 28 (UNI) As many as 43 candidates, including President Pervez Musharraf, Justice (retd) Wajihuddin Ahmed and Makhdoom Amin Fahim filed nominations for the October 6 presidential election in Pakistan.

According to the Election Commission (EC), 15 candidates filed 41 nomination papers at Election Commission Secretariat, Islamabad, 11 candidates filed 12 nomination papers in Punjab, 14 candidates filed 15 nomination papers from Sindh and no nomination paper was filed from Balochistan.

As per the election schedule, September 27 was the last date for filing the nomination papers with the Returning Officer/Presiding Officer at Islamabad and with each of the Presiding Officers at Lahore, Karachi, Peshawar and Quetta.

Chief Election Commissioner Justice Qazi Muhammad Farooq received nomination papers at Islamabad, whereas, the respective Chief Justices of the High Courts in the Provinces received nomination papers from the candidates till 1200 hours on the set date.

''In all, 71 nomination papers have been filed by 43 candidates at Islamabad, Lahore, Karachi and Peshawar,'' said Secretary, Election Commission, Kanwar Dilshad.

He said scrutiny of the papers will be undertaken on tomorrow.
