Hailstorm hits Chennai

Chennai, Sep 27 (UNI) It was a pleasant surprise for residents of Chennai who witnessed a hailstorm this afternoon after morning's sweltering heat.

Many could not believe to their eyes as sharp showers with ice pellets hit the city. The spell lasted for about 20 minutes.

People rushed out of their houses and offices and were seen collecting the pellets.

However, only a section of the city residents were lucky to witness the phenomenon. In other parts of Chennai the sky only remained overcast and there was no rainfall.

Those travelling in cars and two-wheelers were caught unawares.

They rushed to find shelter from the falling pellets.

When contacted, Met officials said the hailstorm was due to thunderstorm activity over the region and did not attach any special significance.
