Manuscripts, books of Saraswati Mahal Library to be digitised

Thanjavur, Sep 26 (UNI) The famed Saraswathi Mahal Library here has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Tirumala-Tirupati Devasthanams to digitise its manuscripts and books.

District Collector C Vijayaraj Kumar, who is also the Director of Saraswathi Mahal Library, and Director of Sri Venkateswara Digital Library of the TTD, P S Reddy, signed the MoU in the presence of Tamil Nadu School Education Minister Thangam Thennarasu recently.

The TTD would digitise the books and manuscripts free of cost, Vijayaraj told newspersons, adding the digitisation would help to preserve ancient manuscripts and provide research scholars, an access to the storehouse. Hitherto, preservation was done using 'Citronella oil and microfilming process.' Digitisation, which had been recognised as a special feature of Information Technology, would preserve valuable documents for posterity, Mr Reddy said adding the TTD had recently started digitisation in the historic Connemara Library in Chennai.
