Demonstrat peacefully against land occupation by Army: Geelani

Srinagar, Sep 26 (UNI) Chairman of the breakaway Hurriyat Conference (HC) Syed Ali Shah Geelani today appealed to people to hold peaceful demonstrations against the ''illegal and forcible occupation'' of land by the Army and other security forces in Jammu and Kashmir.

The Army and other security forces had occupied 4.15 lakh kanals of land for setting up hundreds of camps in all parts of the state and illegal and forcible occupation by them was still going on, Mr Geelani told a newspersons at the HC headquarters at Rajbagh today.

He said security forces had set up more than 200 camps on 56,000 kanals of land in the twin border districts of Baramulla and Kupwara in north Kashmir.

They (Army) also occupied 1.24 lakh kanals of land in Ladakh region which was almost half of the farming and other land there, he said.

He said security forces were still in the process of occupying land forcibly and illegally in the Kashmir valley and Doda district.

''I appeal to the people to resist any move by security forces to occupy land in their respective areas'', he said, adding that the resistance should be peaceful.

''When we say peaceful, we mean it, he said in reply to a question.

He said the people had every right to protect their interests in the wake of security forcs occupying grave yards, Idgahs, farming land and orchards besides other vacant lands in the state.
