10 hurt in mob violence during Ganesh idols immersion

Vadodara, Sep 26 (UNI) At least 10 people, including three policemen, were injured as violence erupted in Machhipeeth and Sulemani chawl localities in the city during immersion of Ganesh idols last night.

Though peace prevailed in the city all through the day with elaborate security arrangements in and around the most sensitive areas, clashes broke out after midnight when some miscreants pelted stones at two immersion processions at Machhipeeth and Sulemani chawl.

Violence also reportedly spread to Panigate Darwaja and Narsinghji Pole, but situation there were immediately brought under control with prompt police action.

Police sources said in the Machhipeeth incident, three policemen, including a PSI, sustained injuries due to stone pelting. A case of rioting was registered at Raopura police station against a 100-odd mob which attacked a shop and damaged a vehicle. Police resorted to a mild lathicharge to disperse the stone pelting mob.

In the other major incident reported at Sulemani chawl, at least seven persons were injured. The violence reportedly broke out after an immersion procession being taken out by Shivshakti Yuban Mandal was pelted with stones by some miscreants. Additional para-military forces were rushed to the spot to quell the mob.

Police sources said so far no arrests had been made in connection with yesterday's incidents.
