Tribute request by Britons invites fury
Meerut, Sept 22, 2007: A church in Meerut, nerve centre of the first ever uprising against British rule by Indian soldiers, has rejected a plaque presented to it by a group of visiting Britons to commemorate the valour shown by British soldiers who crushed the rebellion.
A group of touring Britons, including seven successors of the British soldiers who suppressed the rebellion, visited St John"s church in Meerut with the intention of laying a plaque to commemorate the bravery of their forefathers.
