Income Tax fixes Rs 3,947 crore collection target for Orissa

Bhubaneswar, Sep 25 (UNI) The Income Tax Department has set a target of Rs 3,947 crore tax collection for Orissa for fiscal year 2007-08.

Orissa circle Chief Commissioner of Income Tax S K Mohanty told newsmen here today that the target included Tax Deducted at Source (TDS) budget of Rs 730 crore.

Mr Mohanty said so far the department had already collected about Rs 747 crore. Last year the department collected a sum of Rs 620 crore from TDS.

Last year the department had crossed the target and collected a sum of Rs 3,300 crore against the target of Rs 3,290 crore, he said.

The target for the current financial year for the whole country was fixed at Rs 2,67,490 crore against Rs 2,30,090 crore last year.

Mr Mohanty said, TDS being one of the most important and effective sources of direct tax revenue, Income Tax Department has created new set up of TDS in Orissa with senior officials heading different jurisdiction.

He, however, claimed that the number of defaulters in the state had come down drastically due to use of modern technologies.
