Vedanti's effigy burnt in Pondy, five held
Puducherry, Sep 23 (UNI) Police arrested five workers of Dalit Panthers of India (DPI) and Dravidar Kazhagam for allegedly burning an effigy of VHP leader Ram Vilas Vedanti, who had issued a 'fatwa' against Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi for his remarks against Lord Ram.
Over 100 protesters gathered at the Periyar Thidal and shouted slogans, demanding that VHP be banned and Mr Vedanti arrested for the fatwa. Later, an effigy of Mr Vedanthi was set ablaze.
Meanwhile, state DMK convenor R V Janakiraman, in a statement here said the party would stage a demonstration in front of the BJP head office at Annanagar here tomorrow to protest the fatwa.
