Hyderabad, Sep 23 (UNI) Terrorist organisations operating from Pakistan and Bangldesh were eyeing the historical Buddha statue at Hussain Sagar lake here after successfully triggering blasts at Mecca Masjid on May 18 and Lumbini park and Gokul chat on August 25, which claimed about 50 lives, intelligence sources said.
According to the sources here, Harkat Ul Jihadi Islami (HUJI), the mastermind organisation behind the twin blasts and Mecca blast, had targetted the 16-metre-high and 350-tonne monolithic statue on the rock of Gibraltar, made of white granite.
Activists of HUJI, operating from Bangladesh, had conducted recce at the lake, located in the heart of the city and sent details of the statue to their leaders in Bangladesh, the sources added.
Lumbini park, where a bomb was triggered on August 25, was also located on the banks of Hussain Sagar lake, one of the main tourist destinations in the city.
Meanwhile, the police had intensified vehicle checks and frisking operations in and around the city. Security at the lake was also beefed up in view of the Ganesh idol immersion ceremony on September 25.
Security at the world famous Salarjung museum, Charminar and famous temples was also strengthened to avoid any untoward incidents in the wake of the threat to the Buddha statue.
