Chennai, Sep 23 (UNI) DMK Parliamentary Party Leader and Union Minister T R Baalu today urged Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to take stern action against former BJP MP and VHP leader Ram Vilas Vedanti for issuing a 'fatwa' against Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and DMK President M Karunanidhi for his remarks on Lord Ram.

In a letter to the Prime Minister, a copy of which was released to the media here, he urged Dr Singh ''to put an end to such unlawful, undemocratic and provocative attitude of persons like Vedanti, who is driven by religious fundamentalist forces, with deep rooted designs to destabilise the country''.

''This barbarious and heinous threat to the life of Dr Karunanidhi has sent shock waves across the Tamil community and has infuriated crores of Tamils all over the world,'' he said.

Stating that the 'fatwa' against Dr Karunanidhi had hurt Tamil sentiments, cutting across party lines, he said already the atmosphere in the State was tense and charged with emotions.

''Nothing should be let to develop into unmanageable turmoil leading to a flash point,'' he said and sought the intervention of the Prime Minister to put an end to such acts.
