Rupnagar, Sep 23 (UNI) The passengers of a speeding Punjab Roadways bus today had a narrow escape after it rammed into the railing of the bridge on Bhakra Canal at village Ahmadpur about seven kilometers from here.

According to police, the bus carrying about 50 passengers from Manali to Ludhiana, rammed into the railing from left side as it reached near the Bhakra Canal bridge at village Ahmadpur around 0420 hrs in the morning.

The speeding bus was badly damaged and broke a large portion of the railing. The left tyres of the bus derailed from the road but the front left tyre got struck into railing, preventing the bus from falling into the canal.

The passengers of the bus were rescued by the highway patrolling police after breaking the windowpanes of the right side of the bus.

The driver Harpal Singh told police that he saw a truck coming from opposite direction and in his attempt to prevent collision, he applied brakes.

However, despite his efforts to keep the vehicle on road, some portion of the left-side of the bus rammed into the railing, he claimed.
