Drug smugglers shoot dead a cop, injure two

Ferozepur, Sep 21 (UNI) A policeman was killed and two Home Guard personnel were seriously injured while chasing drug smugglers who opened fire on them near Ferozpur-Makkhu road near Dhandhiya village in the district last night.

According to police, head constable Ranjit Singh, who was manning a police check-post erected on a tip-off about two absconding smugglers, tried to stop them when they drove in on a motorbike.

However, when the smugglers tried to speed away, Ranjit Singh, along with Punjab Home Guard head constable Arvinder Singh and jawan Bhupinder Singh, gave them a chase.

The smugglers drove their motorbike into nearby fields and opened fire upon the police team which was closing in on them.

While Ranjit Singh died on the spot, Arvider Singh and Bhupinder Singh sustained bullet wounds.

According to SP Dinesh Pratap Singh, both the smugglers were later nabbed with the help of additional forces which were rushed to the spot.

Arms and ammunition and half kg of heroin was also seized from the possession of the smugglers who were identified as Devinder kumar and Deepak hailing from village Makkhu. They were being interrogated, he said.

The injured Home Guards have been hospitalised.
