Muzaffarnagar, Sep 19 (UNI) Nine policemen, including three sub-inspectors, were today charged with the fake encounter of a dalit youth in Naye Mandi area of the district.

Last evening, police claimed to have gunned down a hardened criminal, who was flying the coop after firing upon a constable in Kotwali area.

Later, the deceased was identified as Teenu alias Ajay of village Kallarpur.

Demanding conpensation to the victim's family, irate villagers staged a demonstration on the Jansath bypass, leading to traffic snarls for a couple of hours.

The traffic jam could only be cleared after senior officials reached the spot and assured action against the errant cops.

Sources said nine police personnel, including Naye Mandi Kotwali in charge Narendrapal Singh, three sub-inspectors D S Kalia, Gyanendra Singh and R B Singh have been booked for murder.

Yesterday, police had claimed that acting on a tip-off about the presence of two notorious criminals under Kotwali police station area, cops reached the spot and cardoned off the area.

On being challenged, the miscreants opened fire, wounding a constable critically.

In the ensuing encounter, a criminal was shot dead. His aide, however, managed to escape.
