Patna, Sep 18 (UNI) The Rashtriya Janata Dal(RJD) today condemned the assault on journalists by the employees of a shopping mall here last night and described it as an 'attack on democracy'.

Lambasting the Nitish Kumar government for failing to protect the members of the fourth estate, state RJD spokesman Shakeel Ahmad Khan here said the unprovoked assault on the media was an open testimony to the fact that law and order in the state had touched an all time low.

He alleged that criminals had been enjoying a free hand during the Nitish Kumar regime and yesterday's attack was a 'black day' in Indian democracy. He also announced his party's decision to extend full support to the scribes' demand for an impartial inquiry.

Questioning government clearance for the construction of the business complex, Mr Khan alleged that it was done in violation of established rules and procedures and demanded stern action against its owner.

He also blamed the police's role in tackling the situation.

About ten scribes and photo journalists were severely assaulted by the employees of the mall when they went there to cover an incident of fire in the complex.

When scribes, mostly from national and local TV channels, wanted to go inside, they were prevented from reaching near the spot by the employees and beaten up. Several of them sustained injuries.
