Minor raped for months in Jalpaiguri

Alipur Duar, Sep 18 (UNI) A minor was being raped for months by her neighbour in the Hothat colony of Jalpaiguri.

The nine-year-old's mother Namita Mondol, who used to be away at work, came to know about the incident last Saturday after the victim, unable to endure the continuous assault, fell ill.

Tarun Chowdhury, the neighbour, allegedly used to visit the girl's house when her parents left home for work, the girl revealed.

She said she had been threatened by the man she addressed as ''uncle'' that if she told it to anyone, he would kill her.

Ms Mondol informed the local councillor Gouri Ganguly, who then asked her to immediately file an FIR with the Alipur Duar police station.

The girl had been admitted to the Alipur Duar Sadar Hospital, where she is under medical care.

The police had visited Tarun's house to question him on the matter. However, they were rebuffed by his wife who informed them that he was not at home.

Local residents today reacted severely when the news reached them. Lori Bose, President of the Abibhabak Committee, formed here by the local residents of Alipur Duar, demanded immediate arrest of the accused and that due punishment be awarded to him.

Alipur Duar SDPO said proper investigation would be undertaken and due punishment awarded.
