Stir for fishermen's release from Lankan custody continues

Chennai, Sep 16 (UNI) More than 2,500 boats and 10,000 fishermen in Rameswaram did not venture out into the sea for the second day today, demanding release of 10 Indian fishermen arrested by the Sri Lankan Navy personnel on September 11.

The fishermen associations had announced a five-day stir from yesterday to draw the attention of the Central and State Governments to arrive at a permanent solution to this problem.

They also wanted the governments to take immediate steps to secure the release of ten fishermen from Rameswaram who were arrested for crossing the International Maritime Boundary Line (IMBL) and lodged in Sri Lankan jails.

They were fishing near Katchatheevu in the high seas off Rameswaram coast, when Lankan Navy fired in the air before taking them into custody.
