Statesman Awards for Rural Reporting announced

Kolkata, Sep 16 (UNI) The Statesman Rural Reporting awards were today conferred on P K Prakash of 'Madhyamam', Sikander Pareek of 'Rajasthan Patrika' and Pankaj Jaiswal of 'Hindustan Times'.

Mr P K Prakash's article ''Caste of Land and Gambles of the Market'', published in the Malayalam daily Madhyamam, fetched him the first prize for his analytical writing on the impact of land reforms in Kerela.

Sikander Pareek of the Hindi daily Rajasthan Patrika, won the second prize for his article ''Dusting Country Roads'', a well-researched article on the infrastructural deficiencies in rural Rajasthan.

Mr Pankaj Jaiswal was awarded the third prize for his article ''Hungry in Bundelkhand'', published in the Lucknow edition of Hindustan Times. The article was a vivid description of the impact of successive droughts in Bundelkhand.

The award distribution ceremony was followed by a panel discussion on ''Has the Left taken one right turn too many?'', which was attended by Left Front MP Md Salim and social activist Medha Patkar among others.
