Islamabad, Sep 16: President Pervez Musharraf has said that he would stand for re-election from the present assemblies.

Musharraf told top PML-Q leaders including Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain, Pervaiz Elahi and Mushahid Hussain Sayed in a meeting that his re-election from the current assemblies is a Constitutional requirement, and he would not go against the Constitution.

He said he was monitoring the political situation, and fully supported a strong and independent judiciary.

Presidential and general elections and negotiations with Benazir Bhutto were also discussed at the meeting, the Daily Times reported.

Shujaat told Musharraf that the PML-Q, its allies and the Cabinet supported his re-election in uniform by the present assemblies.

Mushahid said that the presidential election would be held in the first week of October, after which Musharraf would doff his uniform.
