New Container feeder added to NMPT: Official

Mangalore, Sept 16 (UNI) The Container traffic at the New Mangalore port has shown upward trend as more and more exporters and importers started moving their cargo which recorded handling of over 8128 TEUs upto August this year, a growth of over 32 per cent, port officials informed here today.

In a press release issued here today Mr Tamilvannan, Chairman New Mangalore Port Trust (NMPT) has said that the port had handled about 8128 TEUs till August this year against 6139 TEU's in the same corresponding period.

He said that with the addition of one more Container Feeder Vessel, M.V. Kinship Bangar which has already commenced its operation from New Mangalore Port with a capacity of 354 TEU's the container traffic will increase further from the port.

The new vessel with a capacity of 354 TEUs came from JNPT for loading export containers and will sail back to JNPT. The frequency of the vessel will be once in 8 days. The vessel has 85 reefer points which is specially designed for handling reefer cargo from the west coast.

Mr Tamilvannan also stated that to cope up with the growing container traffic, the Port is gearing up to provide more infrastructures to handle more containers. One Reach Stacker with a capacity of 45 T has already been procured and put into operation in addition to 104 ton capacity mobile crane. Order has also been placed for procurement of one more Reach Stacker. The work of providing container yard with paver blocks measuring 40,000 sq mtrs is nearing completion.
