CPI to mount pressure on Centre over price rise issue

Vijayawada, Sep 16 (UNI) Communist Party of India (CPI) National Executive Member K Narayana today said the party would mount pressure on the Centre to change the Essential Commodities Act 2003 in order to control the spiralling prices.

Addressing a press conference here, he said the Act was amended by the then BJP-led NDA government, but so far, no action was taken by the ruling UPA government despite the prices of essential commodities skyrocketing.

The rise in prices would have a cascading effect on the middle-class, he said adding that the Centre had allowed the US-based 'Wal Mart' company to set up its retail business in the country.
