Web portal claims to shorten weaver-retailor chain

Lucknow, Sep 14 (UNI) A newly-launched web portal today claimed to shorten the weaver-retailor chain to ensure better profits for handloom weavers of the country.

Talking to reporters here, 'handloom.com' CEO D G Ladha said that his website would help big companies and retailors to connect with the weavers directly for production of customised to fabrics.

''Today, the international market is looking for customised fabrics and not the traditional textile created by them...if the weavers and master weavers are able to communicate direcly, then the latest trends can be produced,'' he said.

But at the same time, Ladha failed to explain how a poor, illiterate weaver would be able to access the internet to connect with the retailor or buyer.

The portal CEO claimed that he has approached corporate houses to adopt weaver villages and buy their products directly. But at the same time he admitted that it was not possible for him to reach out to all the unorganised weavers on his own.
