Meeting held to maintain smoke free status of Chandigarh

Chandigarh, Sep 14 (UNI) To maintain the smoke free status of Chandigarh, a meeting of Tobacco Control Cell was held here today under the chairmanship of Home Secretary Krishna Mohan.

The meeting discussed various steps taken to ensure the smoke free status of the City Beautiful. All representations and complaints related to tobacco control policy would be handled at a single point by Chandigarh Tobacco Control Cell, which will have its office in the Sector 16 Hospital.

A website highlighting the achievement of promoting the concept of Smoke Free Chandigarh would be inaugurated on September 28. Many international advisors for this campaign would take part in the function.

Warning boards will be displayed in Hindi as well as English languages at all public places and on the public conveyances. There will be one Sub Inspector in each Police Station who will be specifically responsible for ensuring compliance of the tobacco control laws under Prohibition of Advertisement and Regulation of Trade and Commerce, Production, Supply and Distribution Act, 2003 (COTPA).

A sustained campaign will be launched by Municipal Corporation to remove road side tobacco vendors as they had been given sufficient time to wind up.

No tobacco shop will be allotted in the new bus stand and already allotted shops at old bus stand will be reviewed.
