Lashker militant killed, major tragedy averted in Kashmir

Srinagar, Sep 14 (UNI) Security forces killed a militant of Pakistan based Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) and averted a major tragedy while one person was shot at and wounded by ultras in the Kashmir valley overnight.

Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP), Sopore, said police and Army had launched a joint operation at Tujar Sharief, Sopore, about 55 km from here early this morning following a tip off about the presence of militants there.

As the security forces were searching the area, militants opened fire. The fire was returned and in the exchange one LeT militant was killed. One AK rifle and other arms and ammunition were recovered from the slain militant.

Militants shot and wounded one Mohammad Abdullah near Matibugh under Yaripora police station . He was admitted to the hospital, a police spokesman said.

The police averted a major tragedy as they detected a powerful Improvised Explosive Device (IED) planted by militants near railway track at Ompora in the central Kashmir district of Badgam.

The area was immediately cordoned off and the IED was defused by the Bomb Disposal Squad (BDS).
