Home Ministry issues tsunami warning
New Delhi, Sep 12: The Union Home Ministry today issued a tsunami warning for Andaman and Nicobar Islands and coastal states following a 8.1 magnitude earthquake near Sumatra island of Indonesia.
Home Ministry officials said the tsunami alert has been issued for coastal states of Orissa, Tamil Nadu, Karanataka in view of the high magnitude earthquate near Sumata. The alert includes coastal cities of Mumbai, Chennai, Baleshwar and Mangalore and Gulf of Kutch.
The state governments and other agencies have been asked to remain alert as the quake may trigger a tsunami.
The temblor was epicentred between 04.4 degrees South and 102 degrees East.
Malaysian authorities have also issued a tsunami alert.
