Virk remanded to judicial custody till Sept 24

Mohali, Sep 11 (UNI) Former Punjab DGP S S Virk was today remanded to judicial custody till September 24 in the disproportionate assets case filed against him by the state Vigilance Bureau (VB) last week.

Mr Virk was brought here from PGI, Chandigarh by a team of VB officials and presented in the court of Judicial Magistrate Lalit Singla.

However, while remanding the former DGP to judicial custody the Magistrate directed Mr Virk to lay before the court certain documents pertaining to his assets on September 13. The VB has sought these documents.

After the court hearing, he was again taken back to the PGI, where he is expected to remain for some time in view of his deteriorating health. He is reported to be suffering from cancer and various other ailments.

The former DGP was arrested on corruption charges by the state VB from New Delhi on Sunday and was admitted to the PGI Chandigarh yesterday on the recommendations of a medical board of the Civil Hospital here. The medical board after examining him had said that he was suffering from hypertension and that he should be taken to the PGI.

He was first admitted to the Civil Hospital here on Sunday after he was brought from Delhi following his arrest by the VB from New Delhi. It was at the this hospital that he was remanded to two days police custody by a duty Magistrate on Sunday night.

The Magistrate in his orders today reiterated that Mr Virk should only be questioned after obtaining permission from doctors attending on him and in the presence of his lawyers.

He was the DGP during the tenure of Capt Amarinder Singh.
