Punjab to srengthen 2000 Km link roads
Chandigarh, Sep 11 (UNI) The Punjab government has decided to launch a state-wide programme to widen and strengthen link roads on the periphery of all urban areas and major cities of the state.
Presiding over a meeting of PWD(B&R) Department, PWD (B&R) Minister Parminder Singh Dhindsa said, "Village link roads especially near the urban areas cave in very early because of increasing traffic load on these roads. Moreover, there is a tendency to discharge effluents of the cities on these roads especially in the towns where there is no sewerage network." In the meeting, the Minister asked PWD (B&R) Secretary Karan Avtar Singh to coordinate with Punjab Mandi Board for the upkeep of these roads and takeover the stretches of link roads especially falling in the vicinity of urban areas.
The Secretary informed the Minister that a state-wide survey carried out by the PWD regarding such roads had pointed out that over 2000 Km of link road network needed immediate upgradation.
Mr Karan Avtar Singh said that a sub committee consisting of members of PWD and Punjab Mandi Board would identify these roads and the PWD would request Mandi Board to hand over the maintenance of these roads to the PWD. The PWD would also coordinate with local government department to solve the problem of water logging on these roads.
