PerkinElmer announces expansion plan in India

Mumbai, Sep 11 (UNI) US-based health science and photonics major PerkinElmer has announced its expansion plan in India.

Its Indian susidiary PerkinElmer India has also forged a tie-up with Indian Council for Medical Research (ICMR) to expedite its research and genetic screening of newborns (24hr-48hr borns) at five centers including Kolkata, Hyderabad, Bangalore, Delhi, and Mumbai.

The company, said it would be presenting a white paper on genetic screening for India, once ICMR furnishes the critical data required.

PerkinElmer has a 10 per cent share in the country's 400 million dollar health science market.

Speaking to reporters here today, PerkinElmer Chairman and CEO Gregory Summe said, ''Our expansion and opening of new technical and applications support centers reflects the growing demand of health and environmental sciences solution in India.'' All the five centers, initially selected by the company, have genetic screening equipments which are capable of diagnosing at least 30 genetical disorders, Mr Summe said.

PerkinElmer has set up a ''Global Application Development Centre'' for R&D and a ''Demo Centre'' in Mumbai for its analytical instrumentation and life science technology ranges. Apart from these, it also plans to launch ''Raman Station 400 Spectrophotometer'' in India, which could be used for identification of chemicals used in explosives, narcotics and counterfeiting.
