Fishermen assn threatens 'fast unto death'

Puducherry, Sep 11(UNI) The mechanised fishing boat owners association here has threatened to go on a 'fast unto death' if the government failed to provide the required facilities to them.

A decision to this effect was taken at a consultation meeting of the association here today.

The meeting resolved that if the government failed to dredge out the sand from the sea mouth, which was causing damage to their boats within 20 days, they would resort to fast unto death.

Other resolutions adopted at the meeting urged the administration to appoint a special officer to resolve the problems pertaining to e port, provision of assistance during the ban period of fishing in time, diesel subsidy and providing walkie-talkie sets to fishermen venturing into the sea.

The mechanised fishermen were not venturing into the sea due to accumulation of sand at the sea mouth for the last two days as their boats were getting damaged.
