Eight houses, fish market gutted in fire

Thanjavur, Sep 11 (UNI) Eight houses and a fish market were gutted in a fire when a lighted cracker landed on a house at Velanganni in Nagapattinam district of Tamil Nadu last night.

Police said the fire soon spread to seven other houses and engulfed the fish market. The crackers were burst in connection with the annual festival at the famed Velanganni church.

Fire tenders rushed to the spot and extinguished the blaze.

Property worth several lakhs were destroyed in the fire, police added.
