Cong distances itself from Allahabad HC remark
New Delhi, Sep 11 (UNI) The Congress today sought to distance itself from the remark of an Allahabad High Court Judge that Bhagwad Gita should be treated as ''Rashtriya Dharma.'' The government would act within the ambit of the Constitution and the laws enacted by Parliament, AICC spokesperson Jayanti Natarajan told reporters who sought her comments on the judge's observation in a verdict.
She refused to make a direct comment on the remark.
Justice S N Srivastava had said in a ruling that it was the duty of every Indian citizen under article 51-A of the Constitution, irrespective of caste, creed or religion to follow dharma propounded by Bhagwad Gita.
Justice Srivastava said as India had recognised national flag, national bird, national anthem and national flower, the holy text may also be considered as national 'Dharma Shastra'.
