Centenary celebrations of J&K Scouts & Guides

Srinagar, Sep 11 (UNI) Jammu and Kashmir Governor Lt Gen (Retd) S K Sinha today exhorted the youth to be in the vanguard for practicing and propagating rich ideals of the state's heritage.

Presiding over the centenary celebrations of Jammu and Kashmir Scouts and Guides here, he said amity, brotherhood and peace were the hallmark of heritage of the beautiful Valley.

Gen Sinha said the people of Kashmir were inheritors of their glorious past as they have kept aloft the flame of brotherhood during most testing times.

He hoped that the people would send this message to the entire country and in fact to the whole world. The scouting movement too stands for brotherhood and peace, the Governor said, adding it was befitting that the activity had been gaining momentum in Kashmir like other parts of the country.

In this era of globalisation also known as the age of knowledge, he said alongside physical activities the youth of Kashmir would continue to keep themselves with the ornament of knowledge and face the world with much more confidence and vigour.

''It is equally important to build the character by adhering to the values of humanity,'' Gen Sinha said and hoped that the youngsters of today would become proud citizens of tomorrow.

The Governor expressed satisfaction that the scout and girl guide movement was gaining the desired momentum in Kashmir and referred to the proposed mega rally being organised in February next year in which more than one lakh youngsters were likely to participate.

He exuded confidence that the new generation would take the responsibilities of the nation with valour and fortitude.

As a scout, Gen Sinha said he was very impressed with the message conveyed by the daughter of Badin Powell, the founder of this great movement, when she visited their school in Bihar.

He said Badin Powell's first portion of life was dedicated to the Army with his contribution in inculcating the spirit of discipline and amity among youth being immense.

It was really heartening to give pleasure to others by selfless and dedicated service, Gen Sinha said and called upon the youth to keep this in mind in their day-to-day dealings.
