Assam to introduce English at primary school level

Guwahati, Sep 11 (UNI) The Assam government has decided to introduce English at the primary school level to do away with the disparity between Assamese and English medium institutions.

Officials here today said state Education Minister Ripun Bora announced yesterday that the new syllabus would be implemented from the academic year.

He said poor infrastructure of the state government schools despite huge funds allocated by Centre had led to an alarming decrease in the number of students.

''Initially about 8 lakh students will be covered and gradually a total figure of 24 lakh students'' Mr Bora said adding that the Sarva Sikhsha mission had been entrusted to reorient the whole English syllabus.

Currently, children from poor socio-economic sector were studying in these government primary schools.

He also said initially, teaching in the language would be imparted in a simple manner.
