Army repair vital bridge connecting Northeast
Kolkata, Sep 11 (UNI) A Bailey bridge on National Highway 34 in North Dinajpur, connecting the Northeast with North Bengal, which collapsed by a flash flood last month, was recently thrown open to traffic after the completion of the repair work by the Army.
Eastern Command sources here today said the highway was the lifeline between the seven sister states of the Northeast and North Bengal.
The repair task was assigned to Corps of Engineers after the civil authorities had failed to make any headway for a week since its collapse on August 22.
Eastern Command personnel completed the repairing task of the 62.5-mt bridge in ten days before throwing it to traffic on September seven.
An engineer platoon was now camping at the bridge site to ensure maintenance of the vital link on a real time basis, sources said.
