AMD launches Quad-Core AMD Opteron

Bangalore, Sep11 : AMD today introduced the Quad-Core AMD Opteron processor, said to be the world's most advanced x86 processor ever designed and manufactured and the native x86 quad core microprocessor.

Designed from inception for the most demanding datacentres, the new processor based servers could deliver breakthrough capabilities to customers in a time of dramatically escalating performance-per- watt emphasis.

AMD India Managing Director Alok Okrie told newsmen that besides global OEMS, Indian OEMs including HCL and Wipro would rollout servers with the latest Quad Core AMD Opteron processor.

The new processors with AMD's revolutionary Direct Connect Architecture introduce innovations that went beyond four x 86 processing cores on a single die of silicon. Besides its high performance, it was also energy efficiency. It offered customers with an investment protection through a customer centric approach enabling non disruptive transitions from dual to quad-core within the smae power and thermal envelopes, he added.

He described it as a four way winner as it offered virtualisation also besides performance, energy efficiency and investment protection. He said around 50 products are currently out in the market based on the quad core processors of AMD. He also said, the Desktop version with the latest quadcore opteron processor would be available in the market from December.
