Ajit Pal Singh Kohli becomes Patiala Mayor

Patiala, Sep 11 (UNI) Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) councillor Ajit Pal Singh Kohli was unanimously elected the city Mayor in the general house of the Municipal Corporation here today.

Anil Bajaj, BJP councillor and president of the party's Patiala unit, was elected Senior Deputy Mayor and Sonia Devi of the BJP was elected the Deputy mayor.

Kohli's name was proposed by the BJP's councillor Sarita Gera and seconded by Narinder Singh Chandok.

Later Jaswant Singh Tiwana, who was a strong contender for the post of Mayor, proposed the name of Anil Bajaj for Senior Deputy Mayor.

As many as 50 councillors were administered the oath of office by the Commissioner of Patiala Division S K Ahluwalia. Of these, 48 councillors took the oath in Punjabi and two in Hindi.

Besides supporters of both the alliance parties, Local Bodies Minister Manranjan Kalia, Parliamentary secretary Raj Kumar Khurana, Ex-president of SGPC Bibi Jagir Kaur, former Minister Surjit Singh Kohli, father of Mr Ajit Pal singh Kohli, and ex MLA Surjit Singh Rakhra were also present on the occasion.
