55,000 families displaced by floods in Manipur

Imphal, Sep 11: Floods in Manipur have affected about 55,000 families of Thoubal, Imphal East, Imphal West and Bishenpur districts.

Officials here said the exact figures of displaced people could not be ascertained since a lot of people are staying with their relatives.

About 50 relief camps have been opened by various clubs and organisations to help the people in flood-affected areas. Rice, water and medicines were being provided to these people.

Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh said he had inspected the godown at Food and Civil Supplies office at Sangaiporou, Imphal, last night from where about 5,460 quintals of rice had already been released.

He said about 24,886 families at Imphal East, 1000 at Imphal West, 21,000 at Thoubal and about 3021 at Bishenpur districts had been affected by the floods.

The government had also released a huge amount of relief supplies including dal, iodised salt, edible oil, bleaching powder, alum and lime. Rice and sugar are also ready to be despatched to the affected areas.

The government had sanctioned about Rs 45 lakh for those affected. That is excluding Rs one lakh that is being paid to each of the families of those who died in the floods.
